  • Artist’s Statement

Interrupted Paths features painted collage works that are a continuation of a series I have been working on over the last several years. Relying on an undulating, striated pattern, they are sometimes seen as resembling natural and geological forms while I intend for their flatness, painted mark and textures to remind us that they are constructions of a painter's workings. As the patterns of stripes make their way across the canvases they seek to be seen as consisting of or originating from one source, in this case, a striated pattern which begins as a drawing and is used as a template for the overall pattern of each canvas. However, they are not allowed to continue without interruption. Rather, the pattern becomes about transitions in color, tone and texture making for a more varied and complex outcome. For the viewer, what is initially a visual experience may become more as we see connections to pattern and interruptions in our own lives and environments.

  • Biography

Donnie Copeland is a painter who works primarily with painted paper to produce non-objective, collaged canvases that emphasize pattern, texture, color and mark. His works are a synthesis of the visuality of landscapes, such as the planted fields and prairie that run along the Mississippi and Arkansas rivers, as well as that of peoples and cultures local and distant, rural and urban.

“Bent curvilinear bands are painted on paper and then affixed to the canvas which in turn serves as a platform for the abstractions. There is a definitive point of distinction between the paper, paint and canvas. Copeland’s paintings suggest cross-sections of ambiguous natural forms or… geological structures and sedimentary materials. Through his investigation of charcoal, acrylic and paper, Copeland’s lyrical strata emerge as both rich and detached. The worked-over surface of the collage elements contradicts the austerity of the pristine canvases.” – Eric Sutphin, Boundary Hunters: Four Parts to Every Story. Exhibit Catalog, 2012.
Copeland’s paintings were recently included in a group exhibit titled Troubled Waters at Hendrix University’s Windgate Museum of Art curated by Bianca Littlepage (2022). His work was featured in a solo exhibit titled Interrupted Paths at the Aughinbaugh Gallery of Messiah College in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania (2015) and more recently in an exhibit titled Continuum at the Focus Gallery, Windgate Center of Art + Design, University of Arkansas at Little Rock (2022).His work is also included in Abstract AR(t) (2016) at the Alexandre Hogue Gallery at the University of Tulsa in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In 2012, Copeland’s work was part of Boundary Hunters, an exhibit featuring seven contemporary painters at Alfred University’s Fosdick Nelson Gallery in Alfred, New York. Other showings include exhibits at the Kansas City Artist’s Coalition, the Arkansas Arts Center and exhibits in Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas.

Donnie Copeland earned a BA in studio art from Ouachita Baptist University (Arkadelphia, Arkansas) and continued his education at the University of Dallas where he earned a MFA in painting. His work is represented by Justus Fine Art in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
