Cities and artists alike are shaped by where they’ve been and where they are yet to go. Root & Canopy: Foundations in Place and Expressions of Growth embraces the balance between grounding and growth, tradition and transformation. This exhibition offers a vibrant snapshot of the creative voices that thrive at the Greenville Center for Creative Arts.
Current GCCA Studio Artists were invited to share work about their relationship to place and how that bond informs their art. These artists considered what keeps them rooted, such as memory, process, and location. They also reflected on what it means to reach upward; to grow and explore. Much like a tree canopy growing toward the sun, artists stretch and change to follow new ideas, take creative risks, and respond to the world around them. Each artist was encouraged to respond in their own way, keeping in mind their rooting in this community and the potential directions their creative canopies may grow.
This exhibition is both a reflection and a celebration of studio artists and the local landscape we cultivate together. Through a range of voices, Root & Canopy centers the distinct perspectives of GCCA's resident studio artists and the creative energy they bring to Greenville, South Carolina as a whole.
