ARTalks at GCCA: Engaging Artist Talks & Demonstrations

Join us at GCCA for our ARTalks, a series of free artist talks, performances, virtual interviews, and demonstrations held in conjunction with our Main or Community Gallery exhibitions. These engaging, hour-long events provide a unique opportunity to learn directly from exhibiting artists, whether they are local talents or creators from across the U.S.

Each ARTalk offers a deeper look into the artist’s creative process, inspirations, and techniques. Attendees can ask questions, gain insights, and connect with the artists in a welcoming and interactive environment. Whether you’re an artist, student, or simply an art enthusiast, ARTalks are a fantastic way to engage with the arts and expand your understanding of contemporary creative practices.

These events occur every other month and take place in January, March, May, July, September, and November.

November 7th

ARTalk with Melissa Haviland

Date: Friday, November 7 from 4-5pm

Location: Main Gallery at GCCA

Join us at GCCA for an ARTalk with The Flood exhibiting artist and printmaker Melissa Haviland. During this free learning event, Melissa will lead a gallery talk and tour of her exhibition, offering insight into her processes and the ideas behind her featured artworks. Don't miss this opportunity to connect directly with the artist of the Flood in GCCA's Main Gallery.

This event is free and open to the public.

Biography:

Melissa Haviland is a printmaking-based installation artist who lives and works in Athen, Ohio. Haviland’s works have shown in 30+ solo exhibitions over 20 years. Haviland has received 4 Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Awards (2009, 2015, 2019, 2025) since establishing herself in Ohio. Haviland has participated in artist residencies at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center (2021), the Lloyd Library and Museum (2020), Kriti Gallery in Varanasi, India (2014), Ucross Foundation (2012), and Anderson Ranch Arts Center (2011). Haviland regularly receives internal project grants from Ohio University to fund her artmaking, research, and the fieldwork necessary to her practice. Her work is directly influenced by research and travels to archives, factories, mines, etc. in India, the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States. She received her BFA from Illinois State University and MFA from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, and currently serves as professor of printmaking and papermaking at Ohio University, where she also chairs the print area and directs study for the Honors Tutorial College Studio Art program.
