Within Her: A Photographic Art History Journey of the Female Form in Sculpture presents an educational visual dialogue between photography, sculpture, and art history. Featuring many 8" × 10" photographs taken by Pete Schramm and paired with accessible art historical interpretative context labels, the exhibition offers a sweeping exploration of how the female form has been imagined, idealized, and continually reinterpreted in sculptural traditions across art history. From iconic monuments to overlooked works tucked away in courtyards and museums, these photographs shed light on both the celebrated and the forgotten, tracing a lineage of symbolic representation, social ideals, and shifting narratives surrounding the female form in sculpture.
The exhibition also builds a broader understanding of how photography can reshape our encounters with sculpture. Since its emergence in the first half of the nineteenth century, photography has provided unprecedented means to analyze works of art for study and interpretation. Through choices of crop, focus, angle of view, and lighting, photographers can do more than document sculpture; they can create compelling reinterpretations. Within Her explores these nuances of photography by revealing how surface details such as patina and cracks, along with the surrounding environment, can powerfully symbolize resilience, endurance, and the weight of historical experience.
Pete Schramm
Biography
Biography:
For Pete, the keyword is enjoyment. His artistic journey is fueled by a lifelong fascination with the world's fragments, rooted in an early affinity for Philadelphia’s gritty urban landscapes, where he began his artistic journey. With 15 years of experience as a Master Docent at the Telfair Museums in Savannah, Pete blends classical painting and drawing traditions with a modern photographic vision. He eschews rigid formal theory, believing that true creativity is a dialogue between the eye and the heart. This artistic intuition is backed by his background as an electronics engineer, a technical foundation that ensures his gear remains a tool for his vision, never a barrier. From the quiet structure of a still life to the kinetic energy of a city street, Pete seeks the natural essence in every frame.
